Neck pain

A Common Complaint with Many Causes – Treated Effectively with Chiropractic Care

Neck pain is extremely common. On average, general practitioners see 7 patients per week with neck-related complaints. Studies show that approximately 80% of people experience neck and/or back pain at some point in their lives.

What Causes Neck Pain?

Neck pain can have many origins, including:

  • Poor posture (e.g. prolonged sitting or forward head position)

  • Stress and muscle tension

  • Overuse or repetitive strain

  • Trauma (e.g. whiplash, concussion, or falls)

  • Degeneration or arthritis of the cervical spine

Most neck complaints are posture-related. Spending long hours hunched over a desk or staring at screens can place significant strain on the cervical spine. In addition, the number of high-impact injuries — such as traffic collisions, cycling accidents, or falls from a motorcycle — continues to rise.

Symptoms Often Associated with Neck Pain

Neck pain is rarely an isolated issue. It is commonly accompanied by:

  • Headaches

  • Muscle spasms in the neck and shoulders

  • Stiffness or pain between the shoulder blades

  • Radiating pain into the arm or hand

  • Jaw pain or TMJ dysfunction

  • Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears)

  • Facial pain or dizziness

Examination

Through a detailed consultation, we begin by mapping out all symptoms and potential contributing factors. Since neck pain can stem from various sources, it is essential to perform a comprehensive orthopaedic, neurological, and chiropractic examination. This allows us to identify the root cause and tailor the treatment plan specifically to your condition.

Treatment

Based on the findings of the examination, a personalised treatment plan will be developed. This may involve spinal adjustments or manipulations to restore mobility in the neck and back. Once movement has improved, we often provide targeted exercises and practical advice to help strengthen the cervical and thoracic spine and reduce the risk of recurrence.

A preventive approach is an important part of the treatment strategy. Relieving pain is only one step — preventing it from returning is just as important.

Notably, spinal manipulation is included in the official guidelines of the Dutch College of General Practitioners (NHG) for the treatment of neck pain. This reflects the growing body of scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of chiropractic techniques in managing spinal complaints.
